Monday, I posted about AI and swimming and did not expect the response it got. The parallel landed harder than I thought it would.

Who learns to swim depends on who has access to the pool. Who builds wealth with AI depends on who has access to the tools, the training, and the time to figure it out. Those two things are more connected than they look.

I have been thinking about what comes next. Not for AI as a concept. For the people in Charleston, across the Southeast, and in every small organization trying to serve their community while the technology moves faster than their budget cycle. What happens to education when AI reshapes credentials? What does a career path look like for someone entering the workforce right now? What does it mean for a woman who built a business with no outside capital if the next phase of competition requires subscriptions, infrastructure, and AI fluency she was never invited to develop?

I do not have clean answers. But the questions are keeping me up. And I think they should keep you up too.

WHAT I AM WATCHING

AI Agents Are Now Your Staff

Platforms like Make, n8n, Zapier, and Anthropic's Claude Managed Agents, launched in public beta on April 8, let small teams build agents that run real business functions end to end. Not chatbots. Agents that execute multi-step workflows, connect to your tools, and keep running while you sleep.

A client intake agent reads a submission, checks eligibility, drafts a response, and logs the record. A grant research agent scans databases and drops opportunities in your shared drive every Monday. A donor follow-up agent sends personalized outreach at the right moment without anyone scheduling it.

I built a version of this using Claude Code. What used to take four hours a week now runs on its own. Anthropic priced Claude Managed Agents at $0.08 per runtime hour. An agent running continuously costs about $58 per month. That is less than a week of minimum wage labor.

The decision you are facing is not whether to hire. It is whether your next hire is a person or an agent.

Ask your vendors one question this week: where is AI in your 2026 roadmap? If they do not have an answer, that tells you everything.

Why it matters across the board: Small businesses gain capacity without headcount. Nonprofits get admin hours back for mission work. Public sector agencies get efficiency without waiting on a procurement cycle. The infrastructure is already inside the tools you pay for. The gap is intention.

BLACK HISTORY MEETS NOW

Our history in the Southeast offers an important lesson about access and opportunity. In the 1960s, public pools and beaches became spaces of tension across the region. In Charleston, eight young men stepped into the ocean at Folly Beach simply to assert their right to be there. In many cities, the response was to close public facilities rather than open them to everyone. Shared spaces gave way to private ones. Public infrastructure quietly disappeared. Over time, this shaped who had the opportunity to learn a foundational life skill. Today, 64 percent of Black children do not know how to swim. That gap is a reflection of choices made generations ago about who access was designed for.

It is worth pausing on that. Not to assign blame. But to recognize the pattern.

We are seeing something similar take shape with AI.

The organizations building AI infrastructure today are making decisions about pricing, access, and design that will determine who benefits from these tools and who does not. Women-owned small businesses, nonprofits, rural health clinics, and community organizations are doing meaningful work every day with limited resources. These are the leaders who stand to gain the most from AI. They are also the ones least likely to be in the room where those design decisions are made.

The opportunity is still open. And access, when it is intentional, changes everything. Every leader reading this belongs at this table. The goal is to make sure you know how to pull up a chair.

FROM THE FIELD

Last Friday I posted about what I hear from leaders across small businesses, nonprofits, and public sector organizations. The fear is consistent. Leaders know AI is moving fast. They do not know where to start. They worry about choosing the wrong tool, wasting a budget they do not have, or moving so slowly they fall behind permanently.

Here is what I tell them.

Start with one broken process, that’s your immediate strategy. Name the workflow costing your team the most time this week. That is your entry point. Do not try to learn all of AI. Learn one tool well enough to solve that one problem. Then build internal literacy before you build infrastructure. Your team needs to understand what AI does and does not do before you automate anything touching a client or a constituent.

The tools exist. The price point is accessible. The gap, for most organizations, is simply knowing where to start.
