The Lead: Legacy, Logic, and the Future of Hope

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the bridge between what was and what will be. This President’s Day, I’ve been sitting with a personal reflection on Barack Obama’s legacy. It’s easy to look back at 2008 as a simpler time, but Obama was our first "Beta Test" for a digital presidency. He didn't just occupy the office; he treated democracy like a platform that needed to scale empathy and community organizing. As the Obama Presidential Center prepares to fully open its doors in Chicago this year, it serves as a physical reminder that a legacy isn't a static monument. It is a living foundation.

The connection between that "Hope" and our current AI driven reality is human agency and connection. Back then, the goal was to give people a voice through the early social web; today, the mission is to ensure those voices aren't erased by automated "black boxes." We must be as intentional with our algorithms as President Obama was with his grassroots movements. Progress isn't a script that runs in the background while we sleep; it’s a choice we make with every line of code. We aren't just spectators in this tech revolution; we are the architects and creators.

What’s Buzzing This Week?

The Agentic Shift (Claude 4.6 & GPT 5.3) We are officially moving past "chatting" and into "executing." This past week, the arms race for autonomy hit a fever pitch.

The Shift: Anthropic released Claude 4.6 Opus with a 1M token context window, while OpenAI countered with GPT 5.3 Codex. These aren't just bots; they are agents capable of managing long-running, complex project workflows without constant hand holding.
Why it Matters: In my consultancy, we’re seeing this translate to "Agent in the Loop" systems where the AI handles the entire project lifecycle, only flagging a human when it hits a high complexity ethical or creative crossroads.

Video Intelligence (Alibaba’s Qwen 3.5) The "Grunt Work Graveyard" just got a new resident: the three-hour meeting recording.

The Focus: Alibaba’s new Qwen 3.5 can analyze and summarize up to two hours of video at once.
Use Case: Imagine taking a recorded strategy session and instantly turning it into a project board, a set of Slack updates, and a client facing summary without typing a single word. This is AMAZING for those of us that facilitate workshops with clients!

Courage, Confidence, and Code as a Girl Scout Troop Leader

I often tell my girls that leadership isn't just about what you do; it’s about the trails you blaze for those behind you. This week, I’m looking at the intersection of Black history, the Lowcountry, and the "Social Technology" of scouting.

Josephine Holloway (The Lowcountry Pioneer): Long before I was leading a troop, there was Josephine Groves Holloway. Born right here in South Carolina (Cowpens), she was a force of nature. In the 1920s and 30s, when the official organization wouldn't recognize Black troops in the South, she ran "unofficial" troops using handbooks her husband had to sneak in from Chicago. She was the original "Vibe Coder," building the system she wanted to see when the official one was gated off. Side eye to the gate keepers.
The "Hidden Figures" of Scouting: Did you know Mary Jackson, the NASA engineer from Hidden Figures, was a Girl Scout leader for over 20 years? She didn't just break the sound barrier at NASA; she used her troop as a laboratory to teach young Black girls about wind tunnels and math. She understood that STEM wasn't just a curriculum; it was a tool for liberation.
From Badges to Algorithms: Today, as I lead my troop through their STEM and robotics badges, I see the same spark Mary Jackson must have seen. We aren't just teaching them how to use a tablet; we’re teaching them the logic of power. Whether it's the hydrological engineering of our ancestors in the rice fields or the agentic AI of today, Black women have always been at the forefront of technical orchestration.
Efficiency with Empathy: Our mantra in the troop is the same as in my consultancy: automate the "robotic" tasks to reclaim time for what matters, like mentorship and the history of the streets we walk every day.

Decoding the Big Four Challenge

Stop using one AI for everything. To be competitive as a leader or individual contributor in 2026, it is important to understand which tool fits which "vibe." Here is the breakdown of how I am using the current heavy hitters:

Google Gemini (The Researcher): Think of Gemini as your creative partner with a direct line to the world’s information. Use it for "big picture" thinking and pulling data from the live web.
Claude Code (The Architect): This is for my builders. Anthropic’s Claude Code is a specialized environment for high level software builds and logical orchestration. It is the engineer that turns findings into clean, functional code.
NotebookLM (The Memory): This is your grounded source of truth. Unlike generic bots, NotebookLM only answers from the specific documents you upload. It’s perfect for synthesizing deep research without the risk of hallucinations.

Google Workspace AI (The Executor): This is your day-to-day efficiency. It lives inside your Sheets and Slides, automating the formatting and data entry that used to take hours.

Mastering the logic of these tools is how we protect our "human signal." It’s the difference between letting technology run your life and you directing the technology with purpose.
